<p>Last year, we made &#8220;Firecracker Cheddar Buffalo Burgers&#8221; and the year before, it was Apple Mushroom Turkey burgers with bbq sauce for Memorial Day. This year, in the same tradition, I&#8217;ll be trying out Grilled Chicken with Dijon Apricot Sauce and the coleslaw with mandarin oranges (see recipes below) from this month&#8217;s issue of Muscle and Fitness Hers magazine.</p>

<p>Our Grand Prize Champion, Elizabeth Betbeze, lost over 9% body fat and almost 9 inches off her bellybutton, 4.5 inches off her waist, 3 inches off her hips, and 3.25 inches off her thighs in just 6 weeks!</p>

<p>And <em>WHAT IS WITH THAT MILK MOUSTACHE?</em></p>
<p>The reality is, <strong>drinking milk daily has been linked to childhood obesity, cancer, and brittle bones.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">And if you&#8217;re looking for a healthier choice, <em><strong>almond milk is a true winner.</strong></em> It&#8217;s not pumped with hormones or anti-biotics, nor does it carry with it a high risk for contracting dangerous diseases and food poisoning.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em><strong>When comparing &#8220;apples to oranges&#8221;, here&#8217;s how almond milk compares to cow&#8217;s milk:</strong></em></p>
<ul>
<li>Good for those who are lactose intolerant, gluten-free or allergic to casein protein.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s only 40 calories per 8 oz. serving and low in fat, compared to milk which is 8 grams in fat, which includes saturated fat and cholesterol and packs 146 calories per serving.</li>
<li>Almonds carry very little, if any risk. However, s<em>tudies have linked milk protein to cancer, allergies, respiratory problems, and other illnesses</em></li>
<li><em><strong>Almond milk has 50% MORE CALCIUM than dairy milk</strong></em> (can vary with brand). But even more concerning: &#8220;Studies have shown that our <em><strong>high consumption of animal protein (cow’s milk) leads to lowering the pH of our blood which, in turn, releases calcium FROM our bones to raise the pH of our blood to optimum levels. This causes a net LOSS of bone calcium and actually CONTRIBUTES TO osteoporosis!!</strong></em> Nice, Dairy. Nice…” <em>-Source unknown.</em></li>

<p>If you don&#8217;t want to settle for extra pounds of jiggly, unsightly belly fat, buttons popping off your new clothes, a flabby muffin top hanging over your skinny jeans, or extra extensions on your chin and arms, then you gotta PREPARE in advance!!!!</p>
<p><em><strong>Here&#8217;s 3 &#8220;Strategic Eating&#8221; methods  to help you enjoy your Holidays and still see results: </strong></em></p>
<p><strong>1</strong><strong>.The 6:1 Rule: </strong></p>
<p>Grab your calendar and some highlighters.  Choose 6 days out of the week in which you will be in clean eating mode. Take a red highlighter and choose 1 day that will be your Treat Day. Use this method to plan out your month and help you stay on track.</p>
<p>If you know that at Christmas dinner, you want to enjoy the food and conversation and not worry about what you eat, then stop worrying! Watch your food intake and activity levels for the weeks before and after Christmas. Chances are you will not blow your entire caloric deficit for a month on 1 day.</p>
<p><strong>2.</strong><strong> 90/10 Rule: </strong></p>
<p>Now, if you celebrate Hanukkah or you’d prefer to spread out your “treats” throughout the holiday week, follow the 90/10 rule. This rule is pretty simple to follow. You’ll continue to eat 5-6 small, frequent meals per week. 5 meals per week, 7 days in a week comes to a total of 35 meals. Following the 90/10 rule, you can afford about 3-4 treat meals per week where you can allow yourself to splurge.</p>
<p><strong>3. </strong><strong>The Balancing Act (a.k.a. Your Fall-back Plan) </strong></p>
<p><strong>“A Treat a Day Keeps the Cravings At Bay” </strong>The third holiday eating strategy is to put yourself on a calorie budget. I call this strategy that fall-back plan because if you miss a meal or have an unplanned Weight loss can be very simply described as calories in vs. calories out. If you know that you will be eating a lot more calories than usual, try to budget in an extra 15-20 minutes of cardio to burn it off. Or balance your high calorie meals with lower calorie meals like protein shakes, lean proteins, and veggies during your other meals to keep your calories down overall during the day.</p>

<p>The alarm went off at 6:00 am.  I turned over and turned it off and said to myself, really, already?  It was time to get up and get ready for the Chattanooga Mud Run.  Excitement built as I finished my shower.  Maybe it was the Spark that I had just drank, or maybe I was just ready to run and have fun in the mud.  We had been planning this since last year and it was finally here.  We met everyone at the studio at 7:30 am to get the teams together and make sure everyone knew what was going on.  Some of them looked like they weren&#8217;t morning people, some of them where as ready to go as I was.  Excitement started to build amongst the group as we headed out the door towards the mud run.  The mud stank like manure , the obstacles were new and a little dangerous, and the water was cold,  but in the end I thoroughly enjoyed myself as I am sure most everyone that was involved did as well.</p>
<p>Overall, every one of our Scenic City Boot Camp teams did an awesome job and I really enjoyed watching, supporting, and participating with everyone.  I know that next year&#8217;s mud run <a href="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/IMG_0940.jpg"><img class="alignright  wp-image-554" title="Taylor being sassy!" src="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/IMG_0940-224x300.jpg" alt="" width="189" height="250" /></a>will be even bigger, as we are growing by leaps and bounds.  I would love to have 10 teams represented next year.</p>

<p>This will be a short blog post because I don&#8217;t want you to miss a minute of the video down below.  I hope you&#8217;re doing well today.  We sent this video in our newsletter yesterday, but I have a feeling some of you might have overlooked it because it is a little long, you might of just said I will watch it later, or for some reason you aren&#8217;t receiving our newsletters every Monday. <p>I watched it this morning again, because I had some time and I will tell you it is something that I will watch every once in a while down the road, it&#8217;s that powerful.  (And if your one of the few that will actually take my advice and sit down and watch it, it will put everything in perspective about your behavior and how you treat certain things in your life.)</p>
<p>It answers one of those burning questions that I, and probably you, have had about why we do what we do and how we can get better and lasting results with the actions that we take.</p>
<p>The video is a little lengthy, and it does start out kind of corny/slow, but please watch the whole thing and have a pen and paper handy. You owe it to yourself to take 40 minutes in front of your computer, no interruptions, and<br />

<p>I have never heard anyone make it so simple to understand as Tony Robbins.  Some of you I know, need this right now in your fitness<br />
journey and that is why I am happy to have stumbled upon<br />
this gem of a video for you.</p>

<p>What&#8217;s up,</p>
<p>Okay, there must be something in the air, maybe it&#8217;s the pollen, the sickness going around, the transitions in your life happening this month.  I honestly don&#8217;t know but I do know that it happens every year around this time and it&#8217;s getting a little annoying hearing some of the negativity that people have been expressing.  I don&#8217;t blame you though.  Almost everyone gets &#8220;de-motivated&#8221; (is that a word?) about this time of year.  I don&#8217;t know why, maybe it&#8217;s because it&#8217;s right before the summer, the kids are getting anxious about getting out of school and probably a little stressed.  Exams are during this month or at least preparation of taking the exams.</p>

<p>Maybe it&#8217;s because its been about 4 months since you set those New Year resolutions.  You know, the ones where you said you were done eating foods that are bad for you, you&#8217;re going to start eating healthy and you&#8217;re going to lose those 20 lbs.?  This is going to be your year.</p>
<p>Well, congrats, first of all for making it this far towards your goal, if you&#8217;re still working towards them.  Most people have already abandoned there goals a couple weeks, or even days after their new year started.  If you&#8217;re still working towards your goals, keep going! You&#8217;ll get there, eventually.</p>
<p>What I want to do today is speed up your learning curve, to give you a better road map to achieving your goals.  And there are two words that you need to eliminate from your vocabulary if you want to move on with your goals.  So, without saying anything more, I want to introduce you to two words that I hate hearing , that can and will cause you not to reach your goals. &#8220;Can&#8217;t&#8221; and &#8220;Try&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>I Can&#8217;t or I&#8217;ll Try</strong>.</p>
<p>I think Yoda from Star Wars said it best.  &#8220;Do or Do not, there is no try!&#8221;  I think these two sayings <a href="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/optionsaccordingtoyoda.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-488" title="Yoda's Options!" src="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/optionsaccordingtoyoda-300x224.jpg" alt="Yoda's Options!" width="300" height="224" /></a>are so bad for us because anything that follows those words has already been defeated in your mind.  Once you say the words &#8220;<strong>I can&#8217;t&#8221;</strong>, it&#8217;s usually followed by the word, <strong>&#8220;because&#8221;</strong> which means to agree in implying a reason for an occurrence or action.  In other words, the word because, or &#8220;<strong>by cause</strong>&#8220;, is about to tell you all the reasons why you can&#8217;t do it.  All the lies that you tell yourself.</p>
<p><strong>For example</strong>: I can&#8217;t eat healthy because it takes too much planning!  Why is it that others can eat healthy just fine, but you can&#8217;t?  Or another one that I hear a lot, she can lose the weight, but I can&#8217;t because my job, kids, work, etc. is too stressful and I just don&#8217;t have the time.  If the president of the United States can find time to exercise everyday in his 24 hours, I think that you can as well.</p>
<p>But, let&#8217;s move on to the other word that most of us have probably used in the past, &#8220;<strong>I&#8217;ll try&#8221;</strong>.</p>
<p>Again, the dictionary clearly states that try means an attempt to or effort.  Try, attempt, endeavor, strive all mean to put forth an effort toward a specific end.  But the key word is to try to put forth an effort.</p>
<p>In the words of Nike, &#8220;<strong>Just Do It</strong>&#8220;  What ever it is just go out and do it, don&#8217;t try.  If you want to lose 20 lbs., just do it.  Don&#8217;t make up some lame excuse or tell yourself all the reasons why you can&#8217;t; just go out and make it happen.  <a href="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/nike1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-487" title="Just Do It" src="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/nike1-300x217.jpg" alt="Just Do It" width="300" height="217" /></a>Follow people that have done what you want to do.  Be around people that have accomplished what you want to accomplish. Community is and can be a huge part of your success.  Boot camp for example, is a perfect place for you to be around people that have already accomplished what you want or that are on the same road you&#8217;re on to achieving what they want.  Be and live in the moment.</p>
<p>I have a formula that I want to share with you that I know will help you towards whatever goal you want to achieve.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Thoughts&#8212;-Decisions&#8212;-Actions&#8212;-Results</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&#8220;I ca<a href="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/27730eliminate-can-t-posters.jpg"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-489" title="Eliminate the I Can'ts" src="http://www.sceniccitybootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/27730eliminate-can-t-posters-231x300.jpg" alt="Eliminate the I Can'ts" width="231" height="300" /></a>n&#8217;t&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;ll try&#8221; are negative thoughts, which are going to lead to negative decisions, which are going to lead to negative actions, and therefore are going to lead to negative results.</p>
<p><strong>Example:</strong>I can&#8217;t lose 20lbs., so therefore I am just going to eat the pizza and ice cream, or I will just stop for breakfast at McDonald&#8217;s, which will lead you to eating crappy food, which is going to lead to your pants getting tighter, not looser.</p>
<p>One decision to change your thought process could mean the difference of success and failure.  Changing the &#8220;I can&#8217;ts&#8221; to &#8220;I can&#8221; and changing the &#8220;I&#8217;ll try&#8217;s&#8221; to &#8220;I will&#8221;, is going to produce some amazing results in your life and allow you the freedom to get whatever you want.</p>
<p>I hope this helps keep the motivation going for some of you, I know that some will just read this and not think anything of it, but if just one person reads these words and changes their mindset, I will be happy and feel like I accomplished what I wanted.</p>

It is the self-confidence I have lacked my entire life and am just now enjoying.   I have spent my whole life on the sidelines, being too embarrassed and self-conscious to join in.  Scenic City Boot Camp has given me the freedom to live my life without the regret of missing out because I was too hung up on my weight.  It is the chance to live a longer, healthier life.  It is the opportunity to be a good example for my daughter so a healthy lifestyle will be second nature to her for her whole life.  Because of Scenic City I can run and play with my little girl.  I can buy clothes because I like them, not just because they’re the only ones that fit.  I don’t dread daily tasks like going to the grocery store or pumping gas because I am afraid people will be looking at me. Scenic City Boot Camp has changed my life in innumerable ways- and this healthy lifestyle is here to stay!</p>
<p>Scenic City Boot Camp has given me the tools to understand how to eat smart and exercise right.  Kristen and Kevin have mastered the art of holding their clients accountable while still being supportive and understanding.   It has made working out something I enjoy- not just a daily task I have to fulfill.  It has given me the energy to be a better wife, daughter, teacher, sister, friend, aunt and mother. <p>Tempted to order McDonald’s seasonal <a href="http://www.shape.com/blogs/shape-your-life/shamrock-shake-what-you-should-know-you-sip-and-how-make-healthier-version" target="_self">Shamrock Shake</a> for St. Patrick&#8217;s Day? Try whipping up this guilt-free version at home. This icy bevvie blends low-fat cottage cheese with protein powder, and every sip is infused with a hint of cool minty flavor. Plus, you can’t beat the pretty green hue for the perfect St. Patty’s Day delight!</p>
<p><strong>Ingredients:</strong><br />
1/2c. low-fat cottage cheese (or vanilla <a id="KonaLink1" href="http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/meal-ideas/10-tasty-green-foods-st-pattys-day?page=2#">yogurt</a>)<br />
1 scoop vanilla or plain protein powder<br />
1/8 tsp. mint extract (or to taste)<br />
2-3 packets stevia or sweetener of choice (or to taste)<br />
5-10 ice cubes (more or less depending on how thick you like it)<br />
4-6 oz. water (alter according to desired thickness)<br />
A few drops of green food coloring, or a handful of spinach to make it green<br />
1-2 tbsp. Sugar-Free Instant Pistachio Pudding Mix (optional)<br />
Pinch of guar of xanthan gum (optional)</p>
<p><strong>Directions:</strong><br />
Put all the base ingredients in the blender, and blend away until desired consistency! Swirl in one drop of red food coloring just before serving, and top with whipped cream and crushed candy cane if desired!</p>
